It was a long time ago, when I was still in high school. I was using a pre-3.5 edition of Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) to learn how to use programming languages such as C++. I heard about a game called Dark Alliance (DA) that allowed players to code their own characters, and I was hooked. I wanted to see what the DA team was up to, so I started following them, and I was impressed.
The Dark Alliance part of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise is full of epic moments. Great warriors fight alien monsters, great treasures lurk behind enemy lines, and curiosity – there is much to discover. With each defeated opponent, the player gains experience in the game. But the final boss against the stonemason is a test of patience and a joy to play. It can completely destroy you in a matter of moves. If you need quick help defeating the vicious Stongrinder, read on for some helpful tips.
How to beat the stoner in Dark Alliance
An unfortunate beast stands at the gates of Bangor Span awaiting your arrival. After destroying some of Dürgar’s supplies and killing a few trolls, comes the final piece – the stonemason. Killing this big guy ends the story of Icewind Dale’s Companions in the Halls of Duergar, so make sure you collect and loot as much as you can before moving on to the final battle. And killing a pesky troll boss can be tricky, so it’s better to come prepared and ready to fight, rather than with a figurative headband.
The Stonegrider is equipped with electrical capabilities. His supercharged slam amounts to him hitting the ground three times with electric punches shooting out. There is also his electric blast that shoots up from the ground and sends a beam of energy in your direction. Finally, there’s the exciting Thunder combo, where beams of light surround him and damage everything in his path (that’s you). To defeat the Stonecropper, there is a simple solution: dodge.
Evade his attacks
It may be a cliché, but avoiding the stonemason and his attacks is the best way to go. Jumping attacks aren’t really useful because he’s pretty fast when it comes to power, so you need to keep your distance from this boss. The widespread attacks are just a tip of the hat: Instead, save your energy and wait for the right moment to throw a few punches. After he finishes speaking, you have a few seconds to attack and then retreat. Starting a combo can be risky if he lands on the ground, which you should move away from if he starts it.
Don’t be afraid to heal
This is the last fight of the act, so you can fully use your health potions. He’ll throw a stone or more if you really keep your distance, but there’s plenty of room in the fight to heal. Next to the battlefield there are several unused explosive barrels, in case you need an extra hand. This is the only chance you have if you want to use a distant attack. Otherwise, dodge, duck, dive and evade his attacks. Performing a crazy combo can do the trick, but be prepared for the placement and centering of the dodge button.
If you’re playing alone, these tips will help you deal with the Stoner. With a size or two, you certainly have a better chance of winning, but it’s always best to be prepared. Entering enemy territory alone can be exhilarating, but facing a ruthless troll who can kill you in a few blows can take the edge off. Think football when you take on this rascal: the fumble, the splits, the running game. You can struggle for a few minutes, but you need to be patient if you don’t want to lose hope.
